The six-day warning strike by the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital’s National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has been suspended.
Dr. Josiah Yakubu, the chapter’s president, made the announcement in a statement released in Kaduna on Monday.
Yakubu clarified that the suspension followed a number of discussions and interventions, including from the Nigerian Medical Association’s national and state leadership, as well as an emergency congress that was convened on Saturday.
He said that additional resident doctors at the hospital will return by 10:00 a.m., and that work would resume at the hospital on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m.
Yakubu added that the congress came to the conclusion that the secretary to the state government had stepped in to arbitrate on behalf of the state government ever since their industrial action began.
At the Secretary to the Kaduna State Government’s request, he said, the NMA leadership had a follow-up meeting.
“This differed from our first gathering, when regrettably, some of our members received letters terminating their positions as resident physicians.
Others received warning letters along with a notice that their appointments would be terminated.
“We now realize that the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital’s management took the action on their own,” he stated.
Yakubu claimed that both parties were able to understand the points of concern during the roughly two-hour meeting with the medical association.
“They emphasized the potential ways to resolve the industrial discord in a friendly manner,” he said.
“This was done so that the state’s delivery of healthcare services is not jeopardized and that the doctors are not undervalued.”

According to Yakubu, the state government has pledged to address the physicians’ demands and concerns and has accepted and acknowledged their validity.
“To allow the government to practically initiate and resolve these concerns of manpower and remuneration of doctors in the state as demanded,” he said, “the secretary to the state government appealed for a two-month period.”
“A cost impact analysis of the switch from CONMESS 2014 to CONMESS 2024 has been prepared and sent to the SSG for review by the Governor.
The SSG, Chairman of NMA Kaduna State, NARD President, President of ARD Kaduna, and President of ARD BDTH co-signed a Memorandum of Understanding that was collaboratively crafted to this effect.
“The meeting concluded with the expectation that these developments would be shared with the ARD Kaduna and ARD BDTH congresses for review.”
Additionally, Yakubu pointed out that the NMA and NARD leadership had promised to thoroughly monitor the entire process until all demands were fulfilled.
