Four people were convicted guilty of committing a hate crime against Vinicius Jr., a forward for Real Madrid, and were given suspended prison terms.
The group’s unsettling hanging of an inflatable Vinicius effigy over a bridge close to Real Madrid’s training site in January 2023 is the basis for the complaint.
Before Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey matchup with Atletico Madrid, the effigy was on display with a banner that said, “Madrid hates Real.”
Widespread condemnation of the conduct increased awareness of the 24-year-old football player’s continued racist harassment.
For posting pictures of the effigy online, three of the offenders were given 14-month prison sentences, and the fourth was given a 22-month sentence.
However, after all four of them formally apologized to Vinicius Jr., Real Madrid, La Liga, and the Spanish Football Federation (Rfef), the court suspended the punishments.

As part of the punishment, the group is not allowed to approach Real Madrid’s training facilities or Vinicius Jr.’s house within one kilometer. They are also prohibited from going to any La Liga or Spain national team games.
Ever since he joined Real Madrid from Flamengo in 2018, Vinicius Jr. has been the target of racist taunts.
Five people were given suspended prison sentences after Atletico Madrid supporters taunted the Brazilian winger with racist chants in September 2022 and again during a match against Real Valladolid later that month.
Only a few weeks prior to the effigy incident, in December 2022, Vinicius publicly urged La Liga to adopt more aggressive measures against racism and to ban offenders for life.
Since then, he has emerged as a leading advocate in the struggle against racism in football, garnering backing from players, teams, and league authorities.
