The Federal Government has announced plans to examine and improve healthcare access for civil officials in Nigeria, citing the need for a more effective and current policy framework.
Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, the Federation’s Head of public Service, made the announcement during a free medical checkup for public officials in Abuja, which was organized as part of the ongoing Civil Service Week celebration. Walson-Jack, represented by Patience Oyekunle, Permanent Secretary of the Service Welfare Office, underlined the crucial need of frequent health examinations for government employees, considering the demanding nature of their duties.
“Anyone with good health will spend less money on hospital visits and will be more productive,” Oyekunle added, emphasizing the obvious correlation between health and job productivity.
According to reports, the free medical exercise was well-received, with many federal personnel praising the timely transmission of test results and the immediate provision of essential prescriptions.
However, Oyekunle noted that civil personnel continue to experience difficulty in acquiring vital drugs and sufficient treatment under the present National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) program. She emphasized the importance of policy reform: “These are policy issues.” We need to rethink our policy framework. What we have now is obsolete, especially given escalating medicine prices.”
Civil servants who took part in the program expressed gratitude for the initiative. One of the beneficiaries, Azeez Champion, appreciated the event’s smooth organization despite the enormous turnout. “I encourage those remaining in their offices to take advantage of this opportunity. Health equals riches. We’ve lost a lot of employees owing to irregular check-ups,” he stated.
Another participant, Eneh Benedict, spoke about her experience, stating that the checkup helped her detect excessive blood pressure, something she was previously unaware of. “I was given medication, and it has already begun to improve,” Benedict stated, thanking the Head of Service for the gesture and advocating for its continuation.

Dr. Longbap Dinfa, Assistant Director at the Wellness Centre, Office of the Head of public Service of the Federation, stated that the health program was available to all public servants, not just those in the HCSF. He detailed the several tests performed, including hepatitis B and C screens, typhoid, malaria, blood pressure, and diabetes.
“During the check-up, we discovered several cases of undiagnosed hepatitis, peptic ulcers, and malaria-typhoid.” Dr. Dinfa noted that a woman who collapsed on Sunday was treated immediately and is now stable. He also stated that more complex cases were referred to the National Hospital for expert care and urged all federal officials to prioritize regular medical check-ups.
The government’s renewed commitment to civil servant healthcare reform comes amid rising prescription prices and mounting worries about the present health insurance scheme’s sufficiency.
