All applicants for F, M, and J non-immigrant visas have been instructed to change their social media privacy settings to public by the US embassy in Nigeria.
The guideline, which is available on the embassy’s official website, is applicable to anyone looking to study in the US or take part in academic and professional exchange programs.
Academic study is covered by the F visa, vocational study by the M visa, and exchange visitor programs by the J visa.
The notice states that the measure is a component of increased vetting procedures designed to confirm applicants’ identities and eligibility under US law.
A presidential proclamation on national security that went into effect on June 9, 2025, is linked to the instruction.
In order to facilitate the vetting process required to verify their identity and admissibility to the United States under U.S. law, the notice states that “all individuals applying for an F, M, or J non-immigrant visa are requested to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media accounts to ‘public’ effective immediately.”

The United States is suspending or restricting entry and visa issuance to citizens of specific countries in accordance with the Presidential Proclamation on Restricting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats, which goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on June 9, 2025.
“Those who are subject to this Presidential Proclamation may still apply for visas and show up for their scheduled interviews, but they may not be granted visas or allowed entry into the United States.”
In a statement released in June, the US Department of State stated that it employs all available data in its screening and vetting process for visas in order to identify applicants who are not eligible to enter the country, including those who could endanger national security.
According to the department, all applicants for student and exchange visitor status in the F, M, and J non-immigrant classifications would undergo a “thorough” screening, including an online presence, as part of the new guidelines.
“All applicants for F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas will be instructed to change the privacy settings on all of their social media profiles to ‘public’ in order to facilitate this vetting,” the warning states.
“Every decision regarding visas is based on national security. Throughout the visa application process, the United States must exercise caution to make sure that applicants do not intend to harm Americans or our national interests. Additionally, all applicants must credibly demonstrate their eligibility for the desired visa, including their intention to engage in activities that align with the terms of their admission.
