At the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) national offices in Abuja, members of the Julius Abure-led Labour Party (LP) protested Wednesday about the exclusion of their candidates’ names from the list for the next elections.
Under strict security, the protesters reportedly voiced their ire over INEC’s decision to not list the Abure-led group’s candidates for the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections and certain National Assembly bye-elections.
With signs that read, “INEC should respect the rule of law,” “Supreme Court judgement favors Julius Abure,” and “INEC should not kill the greatest opposition party in Nigeria,” the demonstrators marched around the commission’s grounds while chanting solidarity songs.
But the Labour Party’s acknowledged leadership quickly disassociated itself from the demonstration, claiming that no official party institution had approved or approved the event.

The party called the demonstrators “political impersonators” in a statement released on Tuesday by Interim National Chairman Nenadi Usman’s Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Eluma Asogwa.
“The leadership of the Labour Party has been alerted to an invitation that has been making the rounds in some places about a rumored protest that is set for August 6, 2025, at the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Allegedly, some unidentified individuals are organizing this protest under the guise of the Labour Party. To be clear, the Labour Party does not support the aforementioned demonstration. The party leadership is unaware of the organizers, and the action does not have the party’s support or endorsement.
The party leadership went on to mention that INEC had recently rejected a list of candidates that Julius Abure and his group had submitted, referring to the submission as “illegitimate.”
The Supreme Court’s ruling on April 4, 2025, which said that Abure’s term as chairman of the Labour Party ended on June 8, 2023, was cited as the reason for the electoral commission’s action.
The National Executive Committee of the Labour Party, which is led by Governor Alex Otti, nominated Nenadi Usman as the party’s interim national chairman and Darlington Nwokocha as its interim national secretary in July, escalating the party’s long-running leadership battle.
