Multilateral participation in global governance processes and strengthened parliamentary collaboration have been demanded by Ambassador Dapo Oyewole, Secretary General of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL).
Oyewole stressed the critical necessity for ongoing legislative cooperation while speaking at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland. This is especially important in a world that is becoming more divided and unpredictable.
The global summit brought together speakers and presiding officers from national parliaments worldwide to discuss ways to promote inclusive development, justice, and peace under the theme “A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace and Justice for All.”
CoSPAL Chairman and Ghanaian Parliament Speaker Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Nigeria Senate President Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, and House of Representatives Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, PhD, were among the high-ranking African delegation members.

“CoSPAL’s active participation at the conference reflects the growing influence of African legislative bodies on the global stage,” Oyewole said. The significance of African parliaments speaking with one voice on common continental issues and concerns was emphasized by him.
“Strong and visionary parliamentary leadership is crucial in this time of global fragmentation. Oyewole stated that such gatherings offer a unique and tactical chance for national speakers to share ideas, promote agreement, and develop cooperative solutions to worldwide problems.
These platforms are particularly important for African legislatures since they provide a forum for promoting the continent’s shared interests. CoSPAL was created with the intention of empowering African parliamentary leadership to communicate clearly and cohesively within the international legislative system,” he continued.
The efforts of the African leaders during the conference were commended by Ambassador Oyewole, who especially applauded the powerful statements given by Bagbin, Akpabio, and Abbas. Speaker Abbas’s speech on the digital transformation of Nigeria’s legislative practices was cited by him as being especially progressive, pointing out that reforms are being made to digitize parliamentary procedures and boost public participation.
Parliamentary leaders used the Geneva conference as a crucial forum to restate their dedication to legislative collaboration and multilateral discourse in addressing global issues, particularly as CoSPAL prepares for its third General Assembly later this year.
“As we broaden CoSPAL’s global presence, we also hope to draw worldwide interest to our platform,” Oyewole said, highlighting CoSPAL’s determination to advance inclusive and robust democratic institutions throughout Africa while forming significant alliances with the larger international community.
