The Football Association (FA) suspended former Premier League referee David Coote for eight weeks for disparaging former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in a video that made reference to the German’s nationality.
According to reports, 42-year-old David Coote acknowledged committing a “aggravated breach” of FA Rule E3.2 after being fired by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in December 2024.
The video was leaked online in November 2024 and was shot in July 2020, just after the UK’s first COVID-19 lockdown.
Coote acknowledged that his comments were “crass and inappropriate” and showed “deep remorse,” according to the FA’s written reasons. Along with the suspension, he has to finish a required in-person education course.

Following the release of the video in November 2024, Coote was first placed on leave. After an investigation, he was fired a month later.
After a different video surfaced in February 2025 that showed him inhaling a white drug while on duty during Euro 2024, UEFA banned him from officiating in European events until June 30, 2026.
Coote came out as gay in January, claiming that he had kept his sexual orientation a secret throughout his career out of concern for possible abuse.
Although the former referee acknowledged that the tape was “likely to cause hurt and reputational damage” once it was made public, he informed the FA that he thought he was speaking in a “private” context when he made the remarks about Klopp.
He was exonerated of charges of gambling misconduct earlier this year following allegations that he talked about giving out yellow cards prior to a game.
According to Coote, his mental health has been greatly impacted by the pandemic and subsequent events. The FA hearing was not attended by him.
