A formal inquiry has been opened by the Lagos State Police Command into claims that members of the Onikan Police Station Tactical Squad tried to extort N3 million from a resident while holding them at gunpoint.
The complainant said that the incident happened at around one in the morning on Thursday while he and a companion were traveling from Lekki to Victoria Island for an artist’s event. He was named on X (previously Twitter) as Boluwatife (@Tife_badass).
According to Boluwatife’s thorough social media report, he was stopped by roughly five armed police officers close to the Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge roundabout.
He claimed that after the officers cocked their weapons and dragged him out of the driver’s seat, they accused him of murdering Lekki police officers.
He claimed that he and his friend were handcuffed together, put in a police Hilux van, and driven to the station while policemen drove his vehicle independently.
He claimed that when at the Onikan Police Station, he was told to take off his shoes, socks, and shirt in order to be placed under arrest. His documents and automobile were purportedly checked, but nothing damning was discovered.

He wrote, “Two hours later, they demanded N3 million.” They lowered it to N500,000 following further persuasion after I declined. I immediately called my people for assistance once they gave me back my phone. Thank goodness, I was saved.
When he refused to comply, Boluwatife further claimed that the officers threatened to shoot him several times and frame him as a cultist and fraudster.
Though I’m not fazed, what about the average person who has no one? They spoke to me in a variety of ways. He wrote, “It’s crazy that ten police officers are threatening you without cause.”
In response to the accusations, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said on X on Thursday that a thorough inquiry had been ordered by the state’s police leadership.
“All policemen have been called to the Command Headquarters in Ikeja by Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh, who has also instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to look into the matter. We’ll keep the public informed about the results,” Hundeyin stated.
