Abu Baraa, the most wanted member of the Ansaru terrorist organization and the alleged mastermind of multiple high-profile attacks in Nigeria, has been taken into custody by the country’s troops.
At the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Abuja on Saturday, Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, made the announcement at a special press briefing.

Service leaders and intelligence chiefs stood behind Ribadu, who disclosed that security operatives had been pursuing Baraa from May till his eventual detention in July.
The arrest, in his opinion, represented a significant advance in the war against terrorism.

The increasing entrenchment of the Ansaru group in Nigeria, according to the NSA, made Baraa’s trial necessary.

“I’m happy to let you know that we have successfully completed a high-risk, intelligence-led counterterrorism operation that resulted in the capture of the top leadership of Nigeria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate, Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan, or ANSARU,” he added.

With a public announcement in Kano in January 2012, the group was initially established. It broke away from Boko Haram and positioned itself as a “humane alternative.”

However, its declared goal soon shifted to assaulting government infrastructure, civilian communities, and Nigerian security personnel.

The group revealed its operational and theological ties with international jihadist movements by publicly displaying the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) setting sun logo.

Over the years, Ansaru established itself in both forest-based enclaves and urban sleeper cells, especially in the vicinity of Kainji National Park, which spans Niger, Kwara, and Benin Republic. It also established itself in a number of northern Nigerian cities.
