The average cost of a renal dialysis session at federal hospitals across the country has been cut by 76%—from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000—by the federal government.
The new pricing strategy, which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu authorized, is reportedly already in place in ten teaching hospitals and government medical centers nationwide.
Daniel Bwala, the President’s Special Advisor on Policy Communication, revealed this on Monday. He called the intervention a significant help to Nigerians suffering from kidney disease.
The historic subsidy that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved will help Nigerians afford kidney dialysis. Dialysis sessions used to cost ₦50,000, but now only cost ₦12,000 thanks to this initiative, which helps thousands of people with kidney-related illnesses, Bwala said.
Six Different Geopolitical Zones Have Pilot Centers
According to the release, eleven important facilities are implementing the strategy, including:
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, Lagos Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar Bwala also stated that additional federal centers and teaching hospitals will be added before the year is out in order to increase access across the country.

As part of a policy to lower maternal fatalities, Tinubu last year authorized free cesarean sections (C-sections) for expectant mothers in federal hospitals, the presidential aide recalled.
In order to guarantee that Nigerians are not denied treatment due to cost, Bwala said, “these measures demonstrate the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”
According to medical professionals, tens of thousands of Nigerians have kidney-related illnesses that necessitate dialysis, which frequently requires two to three treatments per week and is expensive for many families.
The government stated that in addition to saving lives, the subsidy is anticipated to lower the number of patients who stop treatment because of the expense.
