President Vladimir Putin is set to host the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, in Moscow, the Russian government has indicated.
Presidential aide Dmitry Peskov confirmed the highly anticipated meeting at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in an interview TASS published on Friday.
The Kremlin spokesman clarified that Putin’s request for the Ukrainian head of state’s presence in Russia was “to talk, not to surrender.”
Noting that efforts toward resolving the 42-month conflict continue, Peskov, who declined to speculate on the outcome, quoted his principal’s comment: “There is light at the end of the tunnel.”
The Russian government insists on achieving its goals in Ukraine by peaceful means but has vowed to move forward with the special military operation if a truce isn’t reached.
Asked about another conversation between President Putin and President Donald Trump following the parley in Anchorage, Alaska, Peskov responded: “There are no developments yet.”
The spokesperson also touched on the US-Russia bilateral partnership, admitting that “the process of bringing our relations out of complete paralysis will take time.”
Peskov added that “much damage has been done to the architecture” of both countries’ ties, referring to the years of diplomatic standoff during the previous United States administration.
