Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has congratulated team-mate, Benjamin Fredrick after Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in the 2026 World Cup qualifier played on Saturday in Uyo.

Troost-Ekong said the Brentford loanee was amazing for Nigeria against Rwanda.

Recall that Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle opted to start Fredrick ahead of Troost-Ekong in the starting XI as Nigeria defeated Rwanda to move one place up in Group C standings, only behind South Africa and Rwanda.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Troost-Ekong was asked about starting the game from the bench, but the former Watford defender quickly redirected attention to Fredrick’s impressive display.

“I want to add something to what the coach said. The focus should not be on me, why I did not start,” Troost-Ekong told reporters.

“We should say a big congratulations to Benjamin. He played an amazing game today.

“To come in a game that is loaded with a lot of pressure at his age here in Uyo isn’t an easy thing.”
