The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has been recognized as the most exceptional and transparent government organization in the nation. Its Chief Executive, Engineer Gbenga Komolafe, has been commended for his leadership, which has established a new standard for efficiency and accountability in the country’s oil and gas industry.
Since Komolafe took office, NUPRC has shown “remarkable openness, policy innovation, and integrity in the management of Nigeria’s upstream petroleum resources,” according to a statement released in Ghana on Wednesday by the Public Space Tracker in West Africa.
Transparency in resource governance is not just a catchphrase; it is a quantifiable practice that has come to be associated with the NUPRC. The organization noted that the Commission is an example of how regulatory agencies ought to operate in a democracy.
The Public Space Tracker’s convener, Dr. Ousman Zaharadeen, stated that the Commission under Komolafe has restored confidence among investors, civil society organizations, and citizens by providing transparent statistics on oil production, licensing, royalties, and revenue remittances.
“A government institution can be both transparent and efficient with intentional leadership, as demonstrated by Engineer Gbenga Komolafe. Nigeria’s petroleum resources are managed fairly and responsibly because to the NUPRC’s excellent work in disseminating reliable information and interacting with stakeholders. This makes it the most exceptional and transparent agency in Nigeria right now, in our opinion,” Zaharadeen stated.

The Commission’s constant practice of providing industry statistics, making sure the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) is followed, and building trust through frequent interactions with operators, communities, and civil society were all noted by the panel. Nigeria’s reputation in resource governance around the world has also improved as a result of these actions, it was said.
NUPRC’s transparency efforts, according to Zaharadeen, have contributed to less opacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, which has long been plagued by corruption and secrecy.
He underlined that Nigeria is now on the path to better energy equity and budgetary discipline thanks to the Commission’s leadership in upstream petroleum regulation changes.
“The Commission has reduced leaks and increased government income by insisting on real-time monitoring of crude oil output and by enforcing strict regulatory oversight. Its interaction with host communities has also shown that extractive governance can be inclusive and people-centered,” the statement said.
NUPRC’s cooperative strategy to combat oil theft was also praised by Public Space Tracker in West Africa, which emphasized that the Commission’s involvement has been essential to recent increases in output and income.
“NUPRC’s transparency has gained it respect both domestically and internationally. Because the regulations are transparent, uniform, and applied equitably, Nigeria is now drawing in more serious investors, according to Zaharadeen.
Emphasizing that accountability and transparency are essential to restoring public confidence in government, the organization called on other government agencies to adopt the Commission’s strategy.
Nigeria needs regulators who can follow the NUPRC’s lead in other sectors, not just petroleum. He stated, “This is about quantifiable actions that bolster institutions, reassure investors, and benefit common people, not propaganda.”
Despite advocating for long-term changes, Public Space Tracker in West Africa said it was confident that under Komolafe’s direction, the Commission will keep enhancing openness, fortifying Nigeria’s budget, and propelling the nation’s shift to a more responsible resource economy.
“The NUPRC has proven to be the federation’s most exceptional and transparent agency. We applaud Engr. Komolafe for his outstanding leadership and encourage him to continue this path of transparency, responsibility, and creativity for the benefit of the Nigerian people,” the statement said.
