Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation and a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), rejected rumors that he had ever expressed interest in becoming the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), calling it “fake news.”

Fani-Kayode criticized the publications in a statement released on Thursday, calling them the work of “419 blogs” that spread misinformation and mischief.

“I’m not familiar with the NFF. I’ve never been asked or nominated to be its chairman or president, and I would politely decline if that were ever done,” he stated.

Asserting that he had entered the contest before quitting to support another candidate, the former minister expressed his surprise at the false statements and tales that were making the rounds on the internet.

“A deeply insulting attempt to drag my name into a matter I know nothing about,” he said, emphasizing that he has no connection with football administration and urging the public to ignore it.

Fani-Kayode cautioned against the dissemination of false material, saying that solely remarks made via his official website, femifanikayode.org, or his verified social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and X should be regarded as genuine.

“These anonymous blogs are illegal in nature. They claim that I said things that I never said. Nigerians should exercise extreme caution and view any story that does not come from my approved channels with the highest skepticism, he advised.

In spite of the harm done to organizations and reputations, fake news has become a persistent problem in Nigeria, and its propagators are not held responsible. Every attempt by the government to control social media in an effort to stop the threat has been fiercely opposed by the public, who believe that such actions are a ruse to stifle free expression.

Major news organizations have checked, but they have not yet discovered any reliable proof that Fani-Kayode was ever a candidate for the NFF presidency.
