Following the resignation of its state chairman from the state NLC Caretaker Committee, which is chaired by Prof. Lewis Monday Igbafen, the Comrade Ochei Mike Onyebuchi-led exco of the Edo State chapter of the National Union of Textile and Garment Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has been placed on indefinite leave.
Following its zonal exco meeting in Benin City, the Union’s Deputy General Secretary, Comrade Emeka Nkwoala, informed reporters of the suspension and said the Oche-led exco was fired for defaming the union.
In order to steer the union’s business after the former exco was dissolved due to various reasons, Comrade Nkwoala remembered that Comrade Joe Ajaero, the national president of the NLC, had asked NUTGTWN to propose a member to be included in the caretaker committee chaired by Prof. Monday Igbafen.
Comrade Oche, who was properly consulted prior to nomination, reportedly accepted participation in the five-member committee and was sworn in. The deputy general secretary added that the union was mortified when word leaked out last weekend about Ochei’s abrupt resignation.
“We learned about his resignation on Monday, September 15, 2025, through social media, stating that he was forced to accept the offer,” he claimed. He didn’t announce his resignation to the union. Prior to his nomination, which he voluntarily accepted, he was consulted and advised on the extent of the assignment; therefore, he should have informed the union of his desire to quit.
Prior to the committee’s inauguration, Comrade Ochei was duly consulted and agreed to serve as a member, but the national body of NUTGTWN, the affiliate union of former NLC president Senator Adams Oshiomhole in his prime as a unionist, he claimed, felt that Comrade Ochei brought the union into disrepute.

The Edo State members of NUTGTWN, he explained, “pleaded during the meeting that they will write an apology letter to the national body and beg not to be dissolved but instead accepted to be suspended till further notice.”
Comrade Nkwoala went on to say that the suspended state chairman resigned from the committee owing to pressure and a strong feeling that it was against the Edo State Government, but he denied giving an interview to any media outlet during the meeting.
Via the media, he maintained that Ochei and his exco’s actions had repercussions as they had obtained his consent before to his nomination but had not consulted the union before his resignation.
Comrade Ochei has tarnished the union’s reputation, Comrade Nkwoala underlined. The National Administrative Council decided to abolish the Edo State chapter of the union during its Zoom meeting on Monday, September 15, 2025.
As of right now, the state executive led by Ochei Mike Onyebuchi has been suspended by our union in Edo till further notice. We came to that conclusion in Benin City after consulting with the different state chairmen of our zone.
The resolution of the union’s national Administrative Council coincides with this conclusion. This implies that in Edo and Nigeria, they are unable to represent the union in any capacity.
