In order to restore credibility, improve professionalism, and improve the public perception of the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission started its mandatory promotion exams for senior officers on Friday.
At the Police Service Commission’s Parry Osayande Auditorium, Corporate Headquarters, Jabi, Abuja, 630 Deputy Superintendents of Police were evaluated for promotion to the rank of Superintendent. This information was revealed on Friday by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations.
According to him, the activity is a component of the PSC’s endeavor to make promotions transparent and based on merit.
The tests were formally opened by former Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, who also serves as the Commission’s spokesman for the judiciary.
He emphasized that learning and self-improvement are essential for career growth in the police and advised officers to continuously seek knowledge and build their capacity for good service delivery.
The chairman of the Commission’s Standing Committee on Police Matters, retired and fdc DIG Taiwo Lakanu, said the exams were “not only timely and necessary but will help the image of the Force.”

“The Force has a systemic rot, which is why we are not as respected as we once were,” he said. The only security agency without a promotion exam is the police.
“We have decided to take exams; if you fail, you fail. We will keep taking the exams, and it will improve the public’s perception of the Police Institution.”
Additionally, Lakanu issued a strong warning to officers not to try to bribe PSC employees, saying, “If you are caught bribing our staff, we will send you away.”

DIG Hashimu Argungu, the PSC Chairman, reaffirmed the significance of merit-based, transparent, and timely promotions.
He emphasized that officers achieving higher positions are guaranteed respect and credibility through the tests.
“Our ideal police force should be one that can operate with little oversight and provide services without undue influence,” Argungu stated.
Next week, officers in the Commissioner’s cadre will continue to take the PSC’s promotion exams and interviews. Later this month, a plenary meeting is anticipated.
The Commission emphasized that these actions are a part of a larger initiative to improve accountability, professionalize the force, and rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police.
