If demands for better member welfare at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) are not met by the state government, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) chapter in Oyo state says it would launch a seven-day warning strike on October 2.
The association’s chairman, Happy Adedapo, talked to NAN via interview.
In an effort to get the government to take action, he added, the strike is meant to raise awareness of the urgent problems that healthcare workers face, such as declining benefits, poor infrastructure, and exhaustion.
On September 18, the group sent the Oyo state government a 15-day ultimatum, Adedapo continued.
According to him, among the many topics covered by the association’s demands are better pay plans and prompt allowance payments.
Other measures include hiring more medical personnel, improving the LAUTECH teaching hospital’s infrastructure, and strengthening its governance framework.
He declared, “We have enlisted the help of the Oyo State Council of Elders members, the deputy governor, the deputy speaker of the house of assembly, and the commissioner of health.”
In an attempt to find long-term answers to these problems, we have unsuccessfully written letters to the governor himself. We are not asking for too much because a worker deserves to be paid.
“We will not reverse our decision unless the government starts the process of enhancing the well-being of our LAUTECH members.”
Adedapo cautioned that the complete collapse of healthcare services in Oyo state could result from the government’s inaction.
He pleaded on Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde and other interested parties to act quickly to avert an impending crisis in the state’s healthcare system.
