An ultimatum of 14 days has been issued by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to the Nigerian federal government to resolve outstanding issues.
The decision was reportedly made by ASUU after a meeting of the National Executive Council was conducted at the University of Abuja on Sunday.
The PUNCH claims that Prof. Chris Piwuna, the national president of ASUU, made this clear in a copy of the strike action that he personally signed.
At the National Executive Council meeting on September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja, the Union expressed disapproval of the government’s persistent disregard for its requests and the disregard for the University system.
In light of this, ASUU has warned the Federal Government of Nigeria that it has fourteen (14) days to resolve these problems. If the Federal Government does not resolve these issues by the conclusion of the fourteen-day ultimatum, the Union may be forced to start a two-week warning strike before going on a full and indefinite strike.
In an effort to maintain peace among universities, the Federal Government, acting via the Federal Ministry of Education, established a committee lead by Abel Enitan, the permanent secretary of the ministry, to investigate a proposal for ASUU.
Renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, sufficient university revitalization money, payment of unpaid salary arrears, and sustainable funding mechanisms are still among ASUU’s demands.
