AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the governor of Kwara State, has vowed to bring bandits and kidnappers to justice and said those responsible for the recent tragic attack on the Oke-Ode community in the Ifelodun Local Government Area will not get away with it.
Local vigilantes and a traditional chief were reportedly ambushed by gunmen on Sunday, resulting in multiple fatalities and instilling dread among the local population.
Rafiu Ajakaye, his chief press secretary, released a statement on Wednesday in which the governor reiterated his request for further federal deployment to defend Kwara’s border communities and claimed to have previously briefed President Bola Tinubu on the incident.
In response to increased military activity in the state, he said that the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 2nd Division had been moved to Ilorin by Army Headquarters.
In the vicinity of Baba Sango, along the Kwara-Kogi boundary, AbdulRazaq revealed that on Monday night, combined Army, DSS, and police forces launched a significant onslaught.
“On Monday night, around 15 armed bandits were neutralized when joint Army, DSS, and police personnel launched an operation near Baba Sango, along the Kwara–Kogi boundary. Tuesday saw the continuation of the same operation,” he stated.
“On Tuesday night, at Government House, Ilorin, I presided over a State Security Council meeting where federal and state security assets were integrated into a single strategy for operations across Kwara North and South,” the governor continued.
In order to safeguard people and property, AbdulRazaq gave citizens the assurance that his government will keep supporting security forces and providing logistics.
“The security forces have assured me that they will smoke out and remove the criminals from their shelters. We’re going to use every tool available to combat insecurity. He declared that Kwara will not serve as a haven for criminals.
The governor issued the following warning to criminal groups operating inside the state’s boundaries: “Any criminal who tries to disturb the peace in Kwara may flee, but you cannot evade justice.” The peace in Kwara will be protected since it belongs to its people.
The Oke-Ode killings, particularly in border areas where bandits are thought to be launching operations, have reportedly prompted requests for stricter security measures and new anxieties among locals.
The pledge from the administration comes as stakeholders are calling for long-term fixes to the state’s vulnerability.
