Three human rights and self-determination advocacy groups located in the United States have harshly condemned President Bola Tinubu for his comments on Independence Day that compared the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to Boko Haram.
In a joint statement released Thursday, Ambassadors for Self-Determination and Advocates for Victims of Injustice and Discrimination (AVID) President Dr. Sylvester Onye signed on behalf of Rising Sun, calling the President’s remarks “reckless, prejudicial, and sub judice.”
Since Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the head of IPOB, is still on trial at the Federal High Court and the organization’s legal appeal is still pending before the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the groups said Tinubu’s comparison of IPOB to Boko Haram was inappropriate.
“That a sitting president would make such a false and inflammatory statement while judicial proceedings are ongoing is deeply unfortunate,” the groups stated.
“This statement is not only subjudice, but it is also an obvious attempt to taint the fairness of the proceedings and sway the verdict.”
Instead, the organizations contended, the president ought to concentrate on tackling Nigeria’s broader security issues.
The statement said that President Tinubu should focus on murderous armed organizations that continue to uproot communities and claim lives around Nigeria, rather than obsessing about IPOB, a nonviolent self-determination movement.
Also, they insisted that Nnamdi Kanu’s influence among his supporters would not be lessened if he were kept in custody.
“We remind President Tinubu that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s popularity cannot be eroded or silenced by any amount of intimidation. Conversely, the groups proclaimed that each day he is held in custody only serves to increase his prominence.
The advocacy organizations called on the US Congress and the US Department of State to examine Nigeria’s government in great detail and make sure that democratic values are maintained.
They also demanded that President Tinubu’s “reckless and prejudicial utterances” against IPOB be denounced by the international community.
Citing earlier court decisions in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s favor, the organization called for his unconditional release and the accountability of Nigerian leaders for what they believe to be “ethnic persecution under the guise of national security.”
The statement cautioned that the government’s present approach might backfire.
“President Tinubu has only been able to demonstrate that the more he detains Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and persecutes IPOB, the more powerful and well-liked both parties grow.
The organizations declared that “the light of truth can never be extinguished by prison walls, courtroom manipulations, or propaganda.”
