On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) formally reopened after weeks of rigorous safety checks, inspections, and employee training conducted by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
The first train left Abuja’s Idu Station, made a stop at Kubwa to collect passengers, and made it to Kaduna’s Rigasa Station. In addition, a return trip was planned for the same day, indicating that passenger train operations on the line had fully resumed.
Callistus Unyimadu, the NRC’s chief public relations officer, verified this in a statement on behalf of the management.
On the first trip, NRC’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, accompanied personnel and passengers.
He went there to observe firsthand the resume ride and contribute to the restoration of public trust in the service.
Dr. Opeifa expressed his joy and praised God Almighty for His grace during the company’s recovery time in an interview with reporters following their arrival in Rigasa.
Noting that the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has made significant investments in rail infrastructure throughout the nation, he emphasized the critical role that a modern railway system plays in promoting national growth and unity.
The head of the NRC reaffirmed his resolve to turn the Corporation around by giving priority to finishing up ongoing projects, optimizing the nation’s rail assets, restoring all serviceable rolling stock, growing services, enhancing customer satisfaction, and modernizing operations and efficiency, especially along the AKTS corridor.
In order to improve service delivery and immediately handle passenger problems, he revealed that a dedicated Customer Service Department had been established.
Dr. Opeifa gave passengers and employees assurances about the company’s steadfast dedication to safety and well-being.
He pointed out that in addition to the obvious presence of military and police officers in stations and along the corridor, covert but efficient security procedures have been implemented to protect all parties involved.
Through the establishment of contemporary, secure, and effective rail transportation networks across the country, Dr. Opeifa underlined his commitment to establishing the NRC as a premier, passenger-friendly service provider that can propel socioeconomic development.
