No Nigerian president, according to Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, has been able to make a speech as memorable and impactful as the one she gave upon gaining independence in 1960.
Kukah noted that Nigeria has not succeeded in establishing a cohesive national dream during his remarks on Thursday’s Prime Time program on Arise Television.
Citing the “American Dream” as an example, the flaming cleric observed that nation-building depends on mythology and aspirations that pique the collective imagination.
Kukah continued by saying that by stifling scholarly participation in governance, Nigeria’s military leaders hindered the development of concepts that would have molded a more powerful country.
“Mythology is central to nation building,” he stated. Reality is not at issue. These days, the American Dream is a myth.
As you can see, however, Nigeria has lacked the aptitude and capability to dream.
For instance, after the 1960 speech, I’ve always told people to close their eyes and ask themselves if they have ever heard a Nigerian president’s speech that truly left them feeling amazed or if there is one that is so memorable, like JF Kennedy’s 1963 speech, that they have to ask themselves, what was I doing at the time this speech was given?
