Some structures at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos were demolished, and Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central, called this an act of impunity.
The Lagos State government’s move was unlawful and a blatant violation of its jurisdiction, he said.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning did not have the legal authority to authorize the demolition project, Senator Umeh noted in an interview with Channels Television’s breakfast show, The Morning Brief, on Monday.
“What the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning did was disrespectful and illegal.
“The matter at hand is the treatment of human beings while taking the law into account. The constitution and laws are the country’s governing documents.
“I am disappointed to learn that the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning came to defend his unlawful action,” Umeh remarked.
The Trade Fair Complex, according to the previous National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is still a federal facility that is run by the federal government rather than the state governments.
Without cause, the Lagos State Government went in with large machinery to demolish people’s buildings and investments at the Trade Fair Complex.
“The federal government, not the state government, is in charge of federal lands. State and federal lands are distinct entities. Any property owned by the Federal Government in Lagos is listed in the Federal Land Registry in Ikoyi rather than the Land Registry in Alausa, the Congressman stated.
“The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning violated the law by doing this,” he continued.
The Trade Fair Management Board has been the only body in charge of managing the complex, including approving new construction, setting property rates, and collecting ground rent, thus he said the state government’s actions were an infringement.
“What the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning did was disrespectful and illegal.
Prior to their arrival almost two weeks ago to demolish the buildings on September 25, he said, “the Lagos State Government had never gone there to carry out any of those functions.”
Before the buildings in the complex were demolished, he claimed that the shop owners and traders were not given enough notice.
Senator Umeh further denied rumors that the impacted structures were built on drainage systems and canals without permission, stating that the Trade Fair Management Board has given its consent to all of the impacted structures.
The fact that the Lagos State Government could move in there without warning also astounded them. He said, “Not even the traders were written to or questioned about anything.”
