Vice President Kashim Shettima has come under fire from Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero for characterizing the Dangote Refinery as a national asset.
He maintained in a statement released on Tuesday that no business, no matter how big or powerful, is exempt from the nation’s labor rules.
He said that Shettima’s comment was a national tragedy and that it might indicate that political power and wealth take precedence above workers’ legal rights.
He charged that the Dangote Group had violated workers’ freedom of association, which included their ability to join any trade union of their choosing.
Ajaero criticized attempts to paint union activities as sabotage or a danger to national interests, stating that the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria was carrying out its mission to shield members from exploitation.
He said, “We make it clear to Vice President Shettima that no business, no matter how large, “strategic,” or well-connected, can operate illegally or surpass Nigeria in size. The government must be ready for the inevitable storms that such injustice will unleash if the Dangote Refinery is to be given rights and privileges above the law. Without justice, there can be no peace.
Ajaero criticized the government for not protecting workers, saying that supporting big businesses was equivalent to condoning lawlessness.
He cautioned that the welfare and security of Nigerian residents are at risk due to the state’s support of the powerful against the weak, characterizing the situation as a declaration of class war.
