The non-governmental organization (NGO) OAKonsult Disabilities Outreach, which is committed to advancing the inclusion and rights of people with disabilities (PwDs), has received assistance from His Imperial Majesty Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye (Orumogege III), the Soun of Ogbomoso.
In honor of Toyitan Abigail, a late child with a handicap whose story continues to inspire advocacy for inclusion in the region, the king made the pledge while hosting a team from the NGO at his palace in Ogbomoso as part of a handicap Awareness and Remembrance Rally.
The demonstration brought together community members, civil society organizations, and schools. It was organized by OAKonsult Disabilities Outreach, a faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to empowering persons and families of people with disabilities. The purpose of the gathering was to commemorate PwDs’ perseverance, promote inclusiveness, and increase awareness.
Marching through key locations in Ogbomoso, such as the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary (NBTS), Takie Junction, Oke-Elerin Junction, Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Soun’s Palace, and Oja Igbo, the participants demanded greater resources, rights, and recognition for the disability community.
Assuring the group of ongoing royal support, Oba Olaoye greeted them and called the NGO’s goal “noble and necessary.”
“Your actions are admirable and endearing. Our financial and moral support for you will not stop. I hope your concept is realized in its entirety. We all gain when the community prospers. You will be happy with it,” the king remarked.
OAKonsult’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Olufunke Adeloye, spoke at the event and explained that the demonstration was a part of the organization’s efforts to promote inclusion in governmental, religious, and community spheres.
According to Adeloye, who started OAKonsult after losing a kid with a disability, the organization’s goal is based on empathy and firsthand knowledge.
“OAKonsult has been working with schools, households, and individuals throughout the Southwest since 2021, with a particular focus on children and youth with special needs. We offer equipment, capacity-building, and awareness-raising initiatives, particularly in faith-based organizations where inclusion is sometimes disregarded,” she said.
The organization wants to provide a “holistic support system” that allows disabled children to flourish in dignity and love while empowering families and communities to successfully care for them, she said.
The OAK PRIME Centre, a specially constructed facility in Oolo, Oriire Local Government Area of Ogbomoso, will offer therapy, education, and rehabilitation for children and youth with disabilities. Adeloye has called for assistance in finishing this project.
