Renowned author Wole Soyinka has come under fire from Rev. Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, a Catholic missionary priest in the Gambia, for what he sees as his quiet throughout President Bola Tinubu’s government.
In a Facebook post headlined “Prof Soyinka then vs. Prof Soyinka now,” he accused the Nobel laureate of going completely silent under Tinubu’s administration and of becoming less outspoken when President Muhammadu Buhari took office.
Ugwu noted that Soyinka was vocal during the administrations of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, characterizing him as a “social crusader” and “movement” who publicly criticized government abuses.
“Then came Tinubu, a man whose academic records are in doubt and whose identity is unclear,” he continued. He has caused Nigeria to incur greater debt and its citizens to live in multifaceted poverty in his two years in office.
He questioned what would have caused Soyinka, who was previously a well-known voice for the people, to “suddenly become deaf and dumb” under Tinubu’s rule.
Ugwu further denied that Soyinka’s quiet was motivated by ethnic loyalty, claiming that the Nobel winner has criticized previous Yoruba presidents, like as Obasanjo.
He also implied that Tinubu’s ability to sway critics may be beyond explanation, jokingly stating that “if this is what people mean by juju, then juju is powerful.”
