In this critique, Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, a serial entrepreneur and human rights advocate with the Ambassadors of Peace and Enlightenment Foundation, charges that the Nigerian president’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, has shown personal animosity towards the Igbo ethnic group through his remarks.

Bayo Onanuga’s comments have certainly sparked controversy, particularly regarding his perceived stance on Igbo issues and the Nnamdi Kanu case. Other critics, like the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), accuse him of tribal bigotry and making statements that undermine national unity, pointing to past remarks, such as warning Igbos to stay out of Lagos politics in 2023, which they label as hate speech.

Onanuga’s statement on Nnamdi Kanu’s case, suggesting he’d receive judgement for his alleged offences, has raised concerns about judicial independence and external influence. Iche highlighted Kanu’s prolonged trial and questioned whether external forces, possibly foreign forces, are driving the case given Kanu’s British citizenship. He also shares concerns about the Tinubu administration’s handling of Kanu’s case, suggesting double standards in treatment based on ethnicity and political alignment.

Onanuga’s statements about Nnamdi Kanu, Iche says, reflect a problematic attitude towards the judiciary, suggesting that it operates under external influence. However, Comrade Iche asserts that Kanu’s legal struggles are not solely a domestic issue but are manipulated by foreign interests.

He further condemns Onanuga’s role, claiming he undermines the integrity of the government by making premature judgements on ongoing legal matters and failing to represent all Nigerians equitably. Calls for accountability and warns that Onanuga’s position is not permanent, emphasising the need for a spokesperson to rise above tribalism and bias.
