At the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, on Sunday, October 12, Kano Pillars supporters stormed the field and attacked Shooting Stars players and referees just after a thrilling late equalizer ended the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match 1-1.
Mustapha Jibrin’s early goal had put Kano Pillars ahead, but Adams Mustapha startled the fans by giving the visitors an equalizer in the 94th minute. Anger-fueled home fans stormed the field after the goal, smashing past security barriers.
Fans were seen pursuing referee Mohammed Tuta and his assistants, Bem Japhet, Shehu Isah, and Alfa Sadiq, in footage from Propel Sports’ live broadcast and videos that were uploaded online. Violence swept throughout the field, as authorities fled for their lives.
Despite being vastly outnumbered, security personnel attempted to maintain order before using tear gas to scatter the crowd. By throwing the gas canisters back at officials and players, several spectators made matters worse rather than better.
Ismail Ayodele and Adams Agba’a were among the Shooting Stars players who were allegedly hurt in the assault. Later footage showed them receiving medical attention and several of them nursing bruises.
3SC Fans TV denounced the incident and demanded accountability and severe disciplinary action on social media.
“We should not propagate this type of behavior,” the organization wrote. Fans also attacked Adams Agba’a and Ismail Ayodele during the commotion that ensued after the final whistle. This lovely game has no place for violence. Fans can and should perform better.
“The aftermath was marred by unacceptable scenes, as our players were attacked by Kano Pillars fans for reasons best known to them,” the fan club said in another statement, despite a passionate performance that gained a point in Kano. There is no place for this kind of behavior in football. Even if we are not the league body, we fervently hope that justice is done. The NPFL’s reputation will suffer as a result. Let’s safeguard the game.
According to a statement issued by Davidson Owumi, the NPFL’s chief operating officer, the board had “noted with concern the disturbing reports and viral video clips” from the match. “Any act of violence, intimidation, or misconduct directed at players, match officials, or fans” was denounced “in the strongest terms” by the league organization, which also stated that disciplinary action will be taken when the case was examined.
Fan behavior has been related to disciplinary concerns at Kano Pillars, one of the nation’s most successful clubs. More than ₦36 million has been fined to the club since 2019 for offenses involving crowds, such as attacking officials and invading the pitch.
Late Sunday night, Ahmed Musa, the club’s general manager and former captain of the Super Eagles, apologized amid mounting indignation, calling the attack “heartbreaking, shameful, and completely unacceptable.”
“I, Ahmed Musa, the general manager of Kano Pillars Football Club, sincerely apologize for the terrible, agonizing, and shameful incident that happened during our game against Shooting Stars Sports Club on Sunday evening,” Musa said at the start of his statement.
“It is devastating, humiliating, and totally wrong what happened to Shooting Stars. It does not accurately reflect Kano Pillars’ identity, principles, or illustrious past. This club has always stood for respect, enthusiasm, and community—values that should never be overwhelmed by indiscipline or violence. We are expected to lead by example both on and off the field as a club with a long history and devoted fan base. Unfortunately, we did not meet that quality at all today.
In addition to the NPFL board and all football fans who watched the commotion, he apologized to the Shooting Stars players, coaches, and officials.
“I sincerely apologize for the pain it must have caused to see something so detrimental to our game,” Musa added. “Violence is not appropriate in football.” It violates all the ideals of this lovely sport and is intolerable and unjustifiable. Football is a game that should inspire, unite, and make people happy. We must face it head-on and not pretend when it degenerates into scenes of mayhem and damage.
He promised that the club would work closely with law enforcement to find and punish the guilty.
“We are aware that merely apologizing is insufficient. You have to do what you say. To make sure that this doesn’t happen again, we would take significant internal action,” Musa promised.
The former captain of the Super Eagles told the supporters to take this as a lesson.
“I want to talk directly to our devoted fans. You are the lifeblood of the illustrious and cherished Kano Pillars club. However, respect, enthusiasm, and discipline are the signs of sincere support rather than violence. “This must be a pivotal moment for us,” he remarked.
In closing, Musa accepted full responsibility for the incident and pledged to assist in restoring the club’s reputation.
“I want to apologize to everyone who was impacted on behalf of Kano Pillars Football Club once more. We apologize to everyone who believes in the spirit of the game, including the Nigerian football fans, the officials, the NPFL, and the Shooting Stars. I’m sorry. In Kano and throughout Nigeria, we accept full responsibility and will take all necessary steps to rebuild respect, trust, and the authentic spirit of football.
