The price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also referred to as gasoline, has been raised by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) once more, from ₦865 per litre to ₦992.
No formal explanation had been provided for the abrupt raise as of Monday.
Attendants were observed modifying their pumps to reflect the new pricing at a number of NNPC retail locations that The Nation visited.
Gas station employees at the NNPC station on Ogunusi Road, Ojodu Berger, Lagos, attested to receiving orders to adjust the price to ₦992 per liter.
However, inspections at Ibafo, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, revealed that NNPC stations there were not supplying passengers with petrol, but rather were still showing the previous price of ₦875 per liter.
The lack of gasoline sales at many other NNPC outlets at the time this report was filed exacerbated availability problems.
Refinery Dangote refutes claims of “dirty fuel.”
The Dangote Refinery disputed rumors that it brought high-sulfur gasoline into Nigeria a few days before to the price increase.
The administration of the refinery declared in a statement on Friday that the allegations were “false, malicious, and misleading.”
The statement came after media reports claimed that Dangote Refinery had imported high-sulfur catalytic gasoline from the UK, which had a sulphur concentration of 690 parts per million (ppm), significantly more than Nigeria’s permitted limit of 50 ppm under the Clean Fuels program.
Refining its commitment to environmental safety and quality standards, the refinery maintained that it was not accountable for any unclean fuel imports.
