Andry Rajoelina, the president of Madagascar, is said to have left the nation.
This comes as demonstrations demanding his resignation are growing more intense.
According to the presidency, Rajoelina was supposed to speak to the country on Monday at 17:30 GMT, but she postponed it after military threatened to take over state television.
This is the second time the president’s speech has been postponed; he hasn’t been seen in public since last Wednesday.
The head of the opposition in parliament, Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, told Reuters that Rajoelina departed Madagascar on Sunday after army forces defected and joined the demonstrators.
“We called the presidential staff, and they confirmed that he left the country,” Randrianasoloniaiko told Reuters.
Rajoelina took a French military plane to leave the country, according to Reuters, which cited a military source. French radio station RFI said that he had reached an agreement with President Emmanuel Macron.
According to the Mauritian administration, Christian Ntsay, the former prime minister of Rajoelina, and Maminiaina Ravatomanga, a businessman who is close to the president, took a “urgent” flight to Mauritius on Sunday.
Rajoelina warned of a continuing unlawful power grab conspiracy when military joined the youth-led rallies, prior to his alleged flight out of Madagascar.
Within hours following the declaration, the elite army unit known as CAPSAT declared that it had taken over the military command and is now in charge of all armed forces, including the air, sea, and land forces.
Anti-government demonstrators cheered soldiers on Sunday, igniting tensions when President Andry Rajoelina declared a coup attempt was underway.
