In support of activist Omoyele Sowore’s demand for the release of imprisoned Indigenous People of Biafra leader (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has endorsed the cause.
Obi called the detention “inconsequential” when speaking on Wednesday at the LEA Primary School in Kapwa, Abuja.
His long-held belief that the only long-term solution to separatist agitations is still dialogue rather than detention was reaffirmed.
When questioned by reporters what he thought about Sowore’s campaign to free Kanu, Obi responded, “I’ve always been consistent on Nnamdi Kanu’s situation.” Obi stated that there was no reason for his arrest in the first place. And I’ve always stated that I will speak with, argue with, and consult with anyone who is agitated. I stated it unequivocally, and I still do.
In support of Sowore and those demanding Kanu’s release, Obi pointed out that amicable communication was essential to resolve such problems.
We’ve been saying this for a while, and I appreciate those who are genuinely attempting to do or say it. Go back and review my previous statements from 2020, 2022, and even 2024. “The rules should be followed now that it’s in court, not only for Nnamdi Kanu but for all agitators nationwide,” he continued.
“There is nothing improper with someone getting upset or suggesting that they should speak with someone. And let us adhere to the rules in whatever we do with them. Therefore, I would like to thank the organizers and all participants.
Obi’s comments follow Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, announcing intentions to spearhead a nationwide demonstration for #FreeNnamdiKanuNow on October 20 in Abuja.
