African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Recall that since his re-arrest in June 2021, the troubled IPOB leader has been held by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Since then, a number of prominent figures have pushed the Federal Government to free Nnamdi Kanu, including South-East governors and Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

In an appearance with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Okonkwo called for a political resolution to the issue in response to human rights activist Omoyele Sowore’s continued requests.

The politician-turned-actor bemoaned Kanu’s seven-year jail sentence and the inadequate administration of justice.

He claims that the way the government has handled the situation has angered a lot of people.

“A country that holds a human being for more than seven years,” he said. Even though you have him under your custody, you are unable to determine if he is guilty of his crime. This is a sign that the country is not doing a good job of administering justice.

“Delayed justice is denied justice.” The Constitution makes it quite plain that the accused or defendant must be tried within a reasonable amount of time when it comes to criminal cases.

Holding a man in custody for nearly seven years is completely irrational. What are you evaluating?

“The legal system has been misused in the case of Nnamdi Kanu. No one is rational enough to spend more than seven years behind bars while a case is under trial.

“People are angry and think that if there is nothing wrong with this man, you should either free him or find a political solution.”
