Peter Esele, the former president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria, has harshly denounced Wasiu Ayinde, better known by his stage name K1 De Ultimate, a legendary figure in Fuji music, for the recent incident in which he allegedly disregarded airport rules.
K1’s actions, according to Esele, were inappropriate for a well-known musician and public figure.
In response to the now-viral episode, Esele said K1’s behavior was a reflection of a larger social problem.
The ramifications of such lawlessness, he emphasized, go beyond personal slights and are a metaphor for the greater national issue of power absolving people of responsibility.
Esele said, “It is a metaphor for a nation where power exempts one from consequence,” denouncing the impunity culture that permeates the nation.
Context of the Airport Incident
K1 De Ultimate was prohibited from boarding ValueJet Airlines aircraft VK 201 from Abuja to Lagos due to the fact that he attempted to bring a flask that contained more liquid than the allowed 100 milliliters.
K1 allegedly disregarded repeated demands to adhere to the airline’s security policies.
K1 was seen stepping in front of the plane and trying to stop it from taxiing in a widely shared video of the incident.
The airline claims that K1’s disregard for the regulations intensified when he allegedly opened the flask and spilled its contents on Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and other travelers in the vicinity.
Esele Criticizes Selective Law Enforcement
Taking aim at Nigeria’s selective enforcement culture, Esele responded, “Aviation laws are clear; liquids over 100ml are prohibited unless medically necessary and declared.” Enforcement, however, yields to persuasion.
He compared the selective justice to larger social tendencies, pointing out the disdain for laws that affect regular people.

He continued by saying, “The culture of impunity is top-down, from government officials using sirens to bully their way through traffic to careless drivers ignoring zebra crossings.”
Esele questioned, “Is this the legacy we want to leave?,” in response to the lack of accountability. Should we substitute apologies for justice? What occurs if the weak are the only ones subject to the law?
Nigerians should demand better and rebuild the country’s civic education, the activist advised.
He declared, “We need to restore civic education, give institutions the freedom to act without fear or favor, and demand that the law protect everyone equally.”
A successful society must hold people accountable for their acts, regardless of their standing, he added, emphasizing the value of following the law.
As a result of Esele’s reaction to the situation, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has banned K1 from flying indefinitely. This suspension will last until the inquiry into the flight incident is over.
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, reportedly ordered the NCAA to put K1 on a six-month no-fly list on August 7 until the whole inquiry was being conducted.
In contrast to how a normal citizen would have been treated, Esele has voiced shock at the absence of prompt judicial repercussions for K1’s activities.
In a functional society, such behavior would have immediate legal repercussions. Without the publicity, K1 probably wouldn’t have been held accountable, he said, adding, “In ours, it prompted a tepid apology, likely because cameras were rolling.”
