The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has announced its decision to boycott the November 2, 2024, local government election, citing a lack of official communication from the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC).

This decision was made on Wednesday at the party’s joint meeting of state executives and local government chairmen in Umuahia.

According to Engr. Sterling Uruakpa, the state Assistant Secretary and acting publicity secretary of the APC in a statement on Wednesday, the party will not rely on social media information about the election.

Instead, the Commission should use proper channels to disseminate timely information to the party. Uruakpa emphasized that the APC, as the ruling party in Nigeria and the largest party in Africa, expects respect and adherence to due process from ABSIEC.

“The All Progressives Congress is the ruling political party in Nigeria and the biggest party in Africa and will not tolerate any form of contempt or disrespect from ABSIEC,” Uruakpa stated.

“ABSIEC must follow due process in their activities, ensure inclusiveness, and provide a level playing field for all the parties in order to gain the confidence and trust of the political parties and the people.”

Background of APC in Abia State

In the 2023 Abia State gubernatorial election, the APC faced internal conflicts and court challenges that affected its candidacy. The party’s nominee, Ikechi Emenike, was initially recognized by the national party but later replaced by Uche Ogah after a court ruling. However, Emenike was reinstated as the nominee following another court decision.

The APC’s experience in Abia State underscores the complexities of Nigeria’s electoral process and the importance of transparency and communication between electoral bodies and political parties.
