The government of Abia State has accused former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of inciting political unrest in the state by making statements at his home in Umuobiakwa, Obingwa LGA.

His former aides, political associates, and a variety of residents attended the event, according to a statement released by the state administration on Tuesday.

The meeting called by Ikpeazu was ill-timed and in violation of both the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) rules governing political campaigns in Nigeria and the constitution, according to the statement, which was signed by Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu.

The Commissioner pointed out that even though Ikpeazu did not formally announce his intention to run for office, his explicit directive to his audience to “deliver their booths and units” during the next elections clearly marks the beginning of a political campaign. Kanu claimed that this action violates INEC’s established regulations.

While asking the former governor to carefully adhere to the law when exercising his rights of expression and association, the Abia government noted that his recent actions were unworthy of a former governor and could stir unrest in the state.

Therefore, it is absurd that Dr. Ikpeazu decided to use this unlawful platform to mount a political campaign and to launch a savage assault of false information and criticism of the current government. Such careless remarks are hazardous because they have the potential to spark unrest and undermine the tranquility that Abians currently enjoy, in addition to being disrespectful to the office he once held.

We would want to send out one last warning: anyone running for office at this time is breaking the law and attempting to agitate the political climate. The ban on campaigns has not been removed. The government won’t stand by and let that occur.
