Before the end of 2025, the Federal Government of Nigeria plans to activate two crucial segments of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway in Abia State, which would be a significant turning point in the region’s continuous infrastructural development in the South-East.

In Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, Minister of Works Dave Umahi made this announcement while meeting with Governor Alex Otti and inspecting federal road projects in Abia.

While the Aba to Port Harcourt segment is scheduled for inauguration in November 2025, the Umuahia-to-Aba stretch, which is being handled by Arab Contractors, is expected to be commissioned in December 2025, the minister stated.

Governor Otti’s cooperative approach, especially in resolving issues like the removal of dealers and rubbish along important roadways, was commended by Umahi. According to him, the governor is “a man with a golden heart” and exemplifies how collaboration across party boundaries can spur quick progress.

Umahi highlighted the scope of ongoing developments, pointing to the Aba–Ikot Ekpene Road, Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road, and the recently awarded Afikpo Road as additional significant federal projects that are revolutionizing the area’s transportation system.

The government inherited more than 2,600 federal road projects valued at ₦13 trillion in 2023, a sum that has since increased to over ₦20 trillion, the minister disclosed, acknowledging the budgetary difficulties the Bola Tinubu administration encountered. Noting that states might toll restored roads to recover their investments, he urged states to assume ownership of some federal roadways even though such initiatives would not be reimbursed.

Umahi underlined the president’s dedication to fair development, pointing out that the South-East is getting an equal amount of infrastructure spending in comparison to other geographic regions. “Regardless of our political affiliations, we have every reason to support this president who is standing with us as South-East residents,” he said.

Reiterating his commitment to improving Nigeria’s road system, the minister disclosed that President Tinubu would shortly travel to Abia to mark the completion of projects along the Enugu-Port Harcourt corridor.

Thanking the federal government for its support, Governor Alex Otti said the partnership was essential to the socioeconomic development of the state.
