The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, said on Friday night the state government would soon extend the retirement age for nurses to 65 years in the state.
The current retirement age for nurses in the state is 60 years.
Otti, who disclosed this Umuahia during his monthly interactive session with journalists at the Government House in Umuahia, said the measure was part of the government’s resolve to revamp the state’s health sector.
He said the government had already extended the retirement age of teachers from 60 years to 65 years.
The governor added that the government had concluded arrangements to establish a state-of-the-art medical city in the state.
Otti said the committee for the project had been set up and the location already identified.
He said: “We are committing everything to it because it is going to be one of our signature projects.
“The whole idea is to reverse medical tourists into Abia.”
The governor revealed that his administration has been operating without borrowing any money.
“We are working on African Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank Group facilities.
“The terms are generous and we believe that when we need them we will be able to access any of them.
“I can say that the state of the state is healthy, but we will continue to keep our eye on the ball,” he stated.
