The Abia State government will conduct an election in the 17 local council areas in the state on November 2.

The Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof. George Chima, announced the date during a meeting with political parties and other stakeholders on Saturday in Umuahia.

The election will be conducted in 184 wards across the state.

Chima told the stakeholders that the essence of the meeting was to assure them of the true desire and determination of the commission to conduct the election.

He said party primaries would take place between September 25 and October 4, while the submission of the candidates’ list would be held from October 5 to October 7.

The ABSIEC chairman said campaigns for the election would take place from October 18 to October 31.

Chima urged stakeholders to ensure that the contestants and political parties played according to the rules.

“Our assurance to you is that the elections into our various local government councils in 2024 will no longer be business as usual.

“The commission is determined to make the elections free, fair, and credible, and also ensure that the elections will be seen as such,” he said.
