The Federal High Court in Abuja has moved the trial of Ansaru leaders Mahmud Usman and Abubakar Abba on terrorism-related charges to November 19.

Because Mohammed Abubakar, the DSS’s attorney, was not present, Justice Emeka Nwite moved the trial, which had been scheduled for October 21, to November 19.

In a letter to the court’s registrar, the attorney expressed regret for his inability to be in court and requested an adjournment so that he could be there to conduct the trial.

After receiving no objections to the motion, Justice Nwite scheduled the two defendants’ trial for November 19.

One of the two defendants, Mahmud Muhammed Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a, was given a 15-year term by the court for illegal mining during the most recent proceedings.

The DSS charged Usman, who is from Kogi State’s Okene Local Government Area, and Abubakar Abba, also known as Isah Adam or Mahmud Al-Nigeri, who is from Daura, Katsina State, with 32 charges of terrorism and related offenses.

Usman, the first defendant, entered a guilty plea to Count 10, which dealt with illegal mining, out of the 32 charges. As a result, Justice Emeka Nwite, the presiding judge, found him guilty of the offense and gave him a 15-year prison sentence.

However, Abubakar Abba, the second accused Ansaru commander who was arraigned with the defendant, disputed the charge of economic sabotage.

The Department of State Services (DSS) charged Usman and Abubakar Abba with terrorism, but Usman entered a guilty plea to Count 10 of the 32-count accusation, which teetered on the edge of economic crime.

Usman denied only 31 counts of the 32-count accusation of terrorism offenses, while Abubakar Abba entered a not guilty plea.

Mohammed Babadoko Abubakar, the Federation’s Director of Public Prosecution, said in the allegations during the arraignment proceedings that the two defendants committed the offenses between 2015 and 2024.

They were charged with, among other things, obtaining instruction in the handling of weapons, creating improvised explosive devices, and bombing the Wawa Military Cantonment in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

They were accused by the security agency of being members of foreign terrorist organizations, participating in abduction and financing terrorism, and receiving war strategy training from a terrorist group in Mali.

They were also charged by the DSS with kidnapping two immigration officers and a customs officer, both of whom were slain while in their captivity.

Before being apprehended by the DSS’s long arm, the accused allegedly gathered millions of naira in ransom money from the relatives of their victims, according to the secret police.

In a similar vein, they were charged with illegally extracting mineral resources without a proper license, a practice that earned them millions of naira.

The DSS has accused the two defendants of using the enormous profits from illegal mineral mining and abduction ransoms to buy significant amounts of weapons and ammunition, including improvised explosive devices.

The DSS further said that the two individuals were trained in Mali and Sudan on combat tactics and terrorism, and that they also helped their followers acquire the same instruction.

They were also charged with hiding information about terror acts in different parts of Niger State.

Justice Emeka Nwite had ordered their remand at the DSS facility in Abuja after they denied the charges.
