One of the vigilantes, Bako, was killed and numerous others were injured in Monday night’s attack on Kpaduma III, a native village in the Asokoro suburb of Abuja, by gunmen suspected of being kidnappers.
Confusion erupted as attackers broke into homes and engaged in gunfire with neighborhood vigilantes in what was dubbed one of the most horrifying attacks in the community’s history.
According to a source, the attack lasted for several hours, during which time gunfire and a grenade-like explosion were commonplace in the neighborhood.
“Many people are currently receiving treatment in a hospital after being injured during the attack,” he said.
He lamented that it is so regrettable that despite the village’s proximity to the city center, kidnappers could still enter the area and carry out their heinous act. He claimed that police officers subsequently arrived in the village, which helped to reduce tension among the people.

Assuring that the command got a distress call reporting gunfire along Kobi Village Road in Kpaduma III, FCT Police Command spokesperson Josephine Adeh verified the event.
She went on to say in a statement that in order to act quickly, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ajao S. Adewale, personally led a response team to the scene that included the Divisional Police Officer, Asokoro Division, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Rapid Response Squad, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations).
According to the statement, the attackers opened fire upon spotting the police team and used two female victims as human shields to flee. It emphasized that the police squad pursued them fiercely and managed to save the two female victims without suffering any injuries.
“Unfortunately, two local security men from the community vigilante were shot and wounded,” the statement said. Following their prompt evacuation to the National Hospital, a medical professional pronounced one of them dead, while the other is still receiving treatment and reacting to it.
