In order to urge the Federal Government to stop prosecuting suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari, the Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN) has demanded his immediate release.
In a statement released on Tuesday by its Comrade General, former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, MEN called Kyari’s ongoing imprisonment “a grave injustice” given the recent spate of convicted criminals receiving presidential pardons.
“The Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN) observes with deep concern the continued detention and prosecution of DCP Abba Kyari despite recent presidential pardons extension to convicted drug traffickers, fraudsters, kidnappers, and bandits, many of whom were arrested by his team in the line of duty,” the statement reads.
According to reports, on Thursday of last week, President Bola Tinubu pardoned 175 people, including Maryam Sanda, who was given a death sentence for the murder of her husband, the late Major General Mamman Vatsa, and the late nationalist Herbert Macaulay.
Among the beneficiaries were prisoners incarcerated for crimes such as fraud, unlawful mining, and manslaughter.
According to MEN, the selective granting of pardon “ridicules the principle of fairness” and essentially renders the legal and moral justifications for Kyari’s conviction moot.
Continuing Kyari’s trial, the group cautioned, would deter law enforcement personnel from putting their lives in danger to combat crime.
The moral and legal foundation for Kyari’s ongoing arrest has essentially been nullified by the recent flood of presidential pardons and amnesties. The organization said, “His prosecution under such circumstances is a double standard that compromises the integrity of Nigeria’s justice system.”
A guy who once put his life in danger to protect public order and national security was the victim of institutional betrayal, according to MEN.
President Tinubu and Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Attorney General of the Federation, were specifically urged by the organization to put a stop to Kyari’s suffering.
As a result, we implore the President and the Attorney General of the Federation to drop all charges against DCP Abba Kyari and ensure his prompt release. A miscarriage of justice and a risky precedent will result from anything less,” MEN said.
Once hailed as Nigeria’s “super cop” for his string of high-profile arrests, Kyari was the previous chief of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reported him wanted for allegedly plotting to tamper with and traffic 21.35 kilograms of cocaine that had been confiscated from suspected traffickers, and he was taken into custody on February 14, 2022.
In response, he entered a not guilty plea to the allegations.
