Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s media assistant, Paul Ibeh, charged on Tuesday that President Bola Tinubu and the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, were attempting to weaken Nigeria’s opposition and democracy.
The statement is made in the midst of INEC freezing David Mark’s ADC leadership.
Ibeh said in a post on X that the President and INEC had influenced Nafiu Bala’s appointment as the ADC national chairman, according to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
Noting that INEC had earlier filed court cases contesting Bala’s eligibility for the ADC chairmanship, he questioned the development and inquired as to what had changed.
Ibeh warned that such moves could amount to a trend toward authoritarianism and accused Tinubu and Amupitan of planning what he called a “democratic faux pas.”
He went on to say that the current state of affairs is comparable to earlier political events in Nigeria’s recent past.
“Bayo Onanuga is posting on his X account that Nafiu Bala is now the ADC Chairman because his Tinubu’s @NGRPresident and Amupitan’s @inecnigeria are in bed with Bala to annihilate the opposition and inevitably subvert Nigeria’s democracy,” he said.
