Leading opposition figures and African Democratic Congress (ADC) members are currently in Abuja to address the nation over the party’s leadership problem.
The party’s stance in light of recent events concerning the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is anticipated to be outlined at the meeting, which is being held at the Yar’Adua Centre in the Federal Capital Territory.
Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, National Chairman of the ADC Senator David Mark, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are among those in attendance.
Former governors Peter Obi of Anambra State, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State are also there.
Former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun, former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, and former Alhaji Kashim Iman are among the other major leaders present.
The meeting comes after INEC decided on Wednesday to stop recognizing David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and other members of the party’s National Working Committee until the legal battle over leadership is settled.
Additionally, INEC declared that it would not keep an eye on the ADC national convention on April 14 and that it would keep things as they are till the issue is resolved.
Mohammed Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, stated in a statement that the commission had also denied Nafiu Bala Gombe’s plea to take over the party.
“The request to allow Nafiu Bala Gombe to take over the party’s affairs pending the court’s decision has also been denied by the commission,” stated Haruna.
He went on to say that INEC would stop doing business with any party groups.
According to the statement, “it will not deal with, or receive further communication from, any of the contending groups on matters relating to the party’s affairs.”
Haruna added that the electoral body would not keep an eye on any political events that any ADC section organized.
“Until the case is resolved, the commission will not monitor any meeting, congress, or convention called by any faction of the ADC,” he declared.
