Deji Adeyanju, a human rights attorney and activist, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fight terrorism and instability in Nigeria by using the same forceful military intervention that prevented the recent coup attempt in the Republic of Benin.
According to the article, Adeyanju made this request in a statement on Monday, commending President Tinubu’s leadership in upholding democracy in the neighboring West African nation and the Nigerian Armed Forces for their prompt response.
As a Nigerian who values democracy and is aware of the perils of military dictatorship, Adeyanju expressed her pride in the occasion.
He called Nigeria’s response, which included synchronized ground tactics and Air Force fighter jets, a daring and admirable action that demonstrated the country’s ability to defend democratic ideals outside of its boundaries.
“Let this serve as an unmistakable warning to anyone attempting to subvert democracy in the Sahel that their time is running out,” he continued.
Adeyanju praised the international assistance but cautioned that if Nigeria does not take significant action to address domestic security issues, the victory in Benin will be meaningless.
“So that Nigeria can truly lead by example, the same might shown in Benin should be applied with even greater resolve to crush the terrorist groups operating within our borders,” the activist emphasized.
According to Adeyanju, Nigeria’s leadership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and its status as a regional force must result in significant protection for its own people.
“Regional leadership is only useful when people at home feel safe, secure, and protected from armed groups and insurgents,” he stated.
His remarks are made in light of the chronic instability in Nigeria’s North-East, North-West, and North-Central regions, where banditry and terrorist assaults continue despite ongoing military operations.
Adeyanju urged President Tinubu to handle domestic security with the same seriousness and urgency that were used in the Benin intervention.
