The way that airline staff handled Comfort Emmanson, a rowdy passenger on Ibom Air, has been denounced by human rights activist Aisha Yesufu.
According to reports, a video that has been making the rounds on social media shows Emmanson being pulled and hauled out of the Ibom Airplane after attacking airline employees on a flight from Uyo to Lagos.
Many have denounced her action, which led to her arrest and subsequent charges.
Yesufu, however, has highlighted a sharp contrast between Emmanson’s treatment and that of other well-known individuals, including as former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole and Fuji artist Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1), who were involved in different airline-related situations but were not taken into custody.
Just the manner in which they requested King Wasiu’s descent… It has been reported that King Wasiu Ayinde shut down an aircraft and even poured whatever he had into it. She noted, however, that he has not been placed under remand.
How come you didn’t drag King Wasiu Ayinde like that out of the plane? Senator Adams Oshiomhole was bundled and dragged on the floor; why didn’t they do that? Yesufu inquired.
The way security personnel violently restrained Comfort Emmanson was also denounced by Yesufu.
She claimed that Emmanson was dragged in a way that damaged her clothes and made her breasts visible to onlookers.
That is considered sexual harassment. Emmanson would now “forever live with the fact that her body part… is now all out on display and people will continue to make caricatures with it,” Yesufu observed, adding, “That is you putting somebody’s nudity in the public while there was literally no need for that to be in the public place.”
Yesufu called into question the lack of dignity in the way the incident was handled in a post on her 𝕏 account, implying that a more courteous approach should have been performed.
Consider how they hauled her away. Are the security guards really given any training on their duties? Yesufu stated, “They pulled her like they were pulling chicken, and an individual from the rear pulled her dress, causing it to tear and reveal her breasts.”
Emmanson’s Controversial Story’s History
Emmanson was reportedly told to turn off her phone by cabin crew on August 10 but allegedly disregarded their request, a normal aviation safety regulation.
After another traveler switched off the device on her behalf, Emmanson became enraged and started a fight.
The airline said Emmanson’s conduct put the aircraft in danger since he attacked a crew member and tried to use a fire extinguisher as a weapon.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria thereupon put her on a lifelong no-fly list and Ibom Air blacklisted her indefinitely.
She was taken into custody by airport security, turned over to law enforcement, charged with a crime, and placed on remand in Kirikiri Correctional Center.

Two justice systems are incompatible. Aisha Yesufu disputes Emmanson’s treatment.
Yesufu criticized the case in a video posted on her official 𝕏 account on Monday, arguing that Emmanson’s treatment brings to light the systemic inequalities in Nigerian legal process.
We can’t have a country with two different legal systems where the type of judicial system you receive or are aligned with depends on your social status. I don’t accept that,” Yesufu declared.
The activist went on to say that although she was “not against the charges and accusations” against Emmanson, she held the opinion that all individuals should receive the same treatment under the law.
She emphasized that the rule of law is valid since it extends to everyone, not just a select few.
Yesufu also attacked the selective justice that she sees in Emmanson’s treatment being different from that of other powerful people.
Why was Comfort the only one they felt at ease dragging on the floor and flaunting her body everywhere? “There are a lot of things that are wrong there,” Yesufu said, adding that the absence of comparable action against well-known individuals like Oshiomhole and KWAM 1 is indicative of a broader problem with selective justice.
“To reiterate, selective justice is in reality injustice,” she said in closing.
