The coroner’s inquiry, which the Ondo State Government established to look into the death of former governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has the backing of the Sunshine League of Professionals.
The group’s leader, Dr. Bayo Akinrimisi, issued a statement in response to the editorial in “The Nation” titled “Let Akeredolu Rest in Peace,” stating that the government is operating in the public interest.
“It is unfortunate that some people have falsely implied that the state government has a personal agenda against those connected to the late governor,” the group added.
“We would like to respond to the editorial that was published by The Nation under the aforementioned title,” it stated.
The politicization and misrepresentation of a serious issue like the death of a serving governor in public discourse is concerning and disappointing, even if we recognize every citizen’s freedom to express their ideas.
To be clear, the recent announcement from the Ondo State Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice about multiple requests for a coroner’s inquest into the death of former Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, was merely an administrative and constitutional response to public outcry.
It is unfortunate that some people have made inaccurate claims that the current governor or attorney general has a personal grudge against previous governors.
“As residents of Ondo State, we are dedicated to making sure that our government behaves honorably.
“Under the direction of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, the Ondo State Government must make sure to preserve transparency and the rule of law. We respect and uphold the legacy of the late Arakunrin Akeredolu in both our words and deeds.
A people-elected government, however, must not ignore legitimate requests from its constituents. Both the law and any responsible government have a duty to recognize and consider such requests.
Therefore, it is unjust and deceptive to minimize our legitimate concerns to a simple political disagreement or personal grudge.
Public interest is the driving force behind calls for a coroner’s inquest, and they should be given the gravity and objectivity they need.

“We anticipate that a coroner’s inquest will be held in a lawful, open, and courteous manner if the state government deems the request to be reasonable.”
The group claims that if the state government does not comply with the public’s request, it will take the matter to court.
“Any person, organization, or media source shouldn’t cause needless fear or public unease about a completely legal and civil procedure.
The people of Ondo State deserve responsible, factual, and adult discourse, particularly when it comes to the death of a leader. Our administration ought to put more emphasis on unity, progress, and healing than on partisan diversion.
If our call is not answered by the current government, we might be forced to take legal action to force the Ondo State Government to respond.
