Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, has promised protesting retired police men that they will be officially removed from the contributory pension plan (CPS) by the national assembly next week.
Akpabio welcomed the retirees to his office on Thursday. The retirees have been demonstrating against their inclusion in the scheme at the National Assembly Complex entrance for weeks.
The House of Representatives passed a bill to exempt the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from the CPS, and Akpabio stated that the Senate will quickly follow suit.
According to a statement released by Jackson Udom, the Senate President’s special assistant on media, Akpabio stated that the policy was “not well thought out” and had caused needless hardship for law enforcement officers who put their lives in danger to protect the nation.
“Assume that you must leave the gate. In terms of the law, that issue is resolved,” he declared.
“We will concur with what the House of Representatives has done and produce an Act exiting you from the Scheme on Tuesday next week.”
The president of the Senate expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will sign the proposal into law because he is “being a listening president.”
The plan is “certainly not good for security personnel,” he said.
Akpabio questioned why other security agencies, including as the military, DSS, and NIA, were free from the CPS but the police remained within its jurisdiction.
He continued, “I see no reason why the Police should stay while those in the echelon of the service are out if the Military, DSS, NIA, and others had left.”

He claimed that Nigeria frequently “copies policies without thinking through their implications” and that many police retirees had suffered as a result of the CPS.
