All 68 ambassadorial nominees submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were confirmed by the Nigerian Senate on Thursday.
Recall that President Tinubu finally sent the names of sixty-eight (68) nominees for confirmation as Nigeria’s ambassadors to the National Assembly. This was a major step in filling Nigeria’s diplomatic posts abroad.
The long-awaited submission essentially puts an end to Tinubu’s administration’s more than two years of running Nigeria’s missions, embassies, and consulates abroad without designated envoys.
It was recalled that stakeholders and foreign observers had put tremendous pressure on the Federal Government to appoint ambassadors as soon as possible, particularly during a period when some US senators, congressmen, and foreign lobbyists had accused Nigeria of genocide and Christian persecution.
It is anticipated that the new ambassadors will be instrumental in furthering Nigeria’s foreign policy goals, bolstering bilateral and multilateral ties, and defending the country’s reputation and strategic interests in the international system.
34 of the 68 nominees are career diplomats, and the remaining 34 are non-career appointees. The nominees were chosen from states in each of the six geopolitical zones.
Ayodele Oke, Kayode Are, and Aminu Dalhatu were among the first group of nominees sent to the Senate by President Tinubu, and earlier on Wednesday the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs screened and approved them. An intense meeting at the National Assembly preceded their screening.
