Due to growing tensions between the US and Iran, the US Embassy in Nigeria has canceled all visa appointments set for Wednesday, March 4, 2026, citing a high risk of protests in Abuja.
The Embassy asked Americans to stay indoors and issued a warning about “Potential Demonstrations” in the Federal Capital Territory in a message published on its website on Wednesday.

Some groups’ protests in the past have led to violent altercations between the groups and Nigerian security forces. The warning said, “The Embassy strongly advises all U.S. citizens in Abuja to stay in their homes on Wednesday, March 4.”
The warning coincides with escalating international tensions after Iranian state and local media confirmed the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following airstrikes allegedly carried out by Israel and the United States.
Tehran quickly retaliated after it was reported that several additional senior Iranian officials had been murdered in the strikes.
Iran reportedly vowed to exact revenge for the deaths of its Supreme Leader and other regime officials by launching several missiles that targeted American sites in Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia. As it entered its fifth day, the battle, which started with coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel over the weekend, showed no signs of abating.
The US Department of State had previously cautioned American citizens around the world to be more cautious earlier in the week.
The advisory said, “Americans worldwide, and particularly in the Middle East, should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran.”
