Anger in Plateau: Residents Take to Streets After Jos Massacre

In protest of the fatal Palm Sunday attack that killed many people in Jos North Local Government Area, hundreds of irate Plateau State residents stormed the streets on Monday morning, defying the state-imposed curfew.

The community where the incident happened on Sunday night, Anguwan Rukuba, was the site of the demonstration.

Videos of the demonstration that went viral on social media showed locals chanting and calling for immediate government action in response to the area’s ongoing killings.

A few protesters voiced their displeasure with the government’s alleged inability to stop the state’s ongoing attacks.

One of the locals taking part in the demonstration claimed that the government’s curfew was insufficient to address the ongoing security issues.

Because of yesterday’s attack, people are outside. The protester stated, “They chased the security men because they are not helping right here.”

He said that residents were forced to escape for their life when the attackers struck during a power outage.

“There was no light yesterday between 7 and 8 p.m., so these people firing — as in straight shooting on rapid — a lot of people had to flee for their lives,” the protest stated.

The demonstration was later broken up, according to witnesses, when Nigeria Police Force officers rushed in to scatter the gathering.

Witnesses said that when officers were getting ready to use tear gas, they chased the demonstrators.

“The police intend to shoot at us, therefore many are fleeing. An eyewitness stated, “They want to use tear gas.”

The demonstration came after an incident on Sunday night in which inhabitants of Anguwan Rukuba were shot by suspected gunmen who were allegedly wearing military uniforms.

According to witnesses, the assailants entered the area at around 8 p.m. and began shooting randomly at people in what they characterized as a crowded market area.

According to Nyam Isaac, a resident, the attackers injured multiple persons during the assault.

Many Nigerians have expressed concern over the ongoing deaths in Plateau State in response to the tragedy, which has caused considerable outcry on social media.

Oyindamola, another user, questioned how the government was handling the ongoing violence.

The Jos North Local Government Area was placed under a 48-hour curfew by the Plateau State Government in reaction to the incident.

In a statement released on Sunday, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, verified the occurrence.

The statement read, “The government has imposed a 48-hour curfew within Jos North Local Government Area with immediate effect, following the tragic security incident that occurred at Gari Ya Waye community, Angwan Rukuba today, Sunday, resulting in the loss of lives.”

While assuring the populace that security forces had been sent in to capture the perpetrators, Governor Caleb Mutfwang strongly denounced the attack, calling it savage and unwarranted.
